Next Stage provides a supportive and creatively challenging environment for young artists serious about their artistic development. Courses run across a semester (two terms) and students work towards group performance outcomes. Course work includes an introduction to a variety of disciplines and stage craft in a holistic approach to performance training. Get ready for the Next Stage of your creative training!
Students engage in a personalised assessment and feedback process with their tutor at the end of every semester, providing them with the information and support they need to decide the next step in their creative education.
Semester 1, 2023: Devising: Adaptability
Great stories transcend the pages they are written on. Explore engaging ways to tell stories as you work with a NIDA Teaching Artist to adapt a well-known literary work for the stage. Select a text and learn the skills of adaptation for performance. Collaborate with your Next Stage ensemble to devise and perform your new work for family and friends at the end of the course.
Course components
- Collaboration: Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a live presentation.
Creative Voice: Assume a variety of roles in a creative process, generate new ideas for an original performance work.
Stage Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a performance.
Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short live presentation.
Semester 2, 2023: Scripts & Staging: Page to Stage
This is your chance to shine and develop the skills necessary to take your performance ability to the Next Stage. Work on a full, scripted performance chosen especially for your Next Stage ensemble. Across 16 weeks you will work with a NIDA director to develop a fully-realised character for performance then present the rehearsed work in a studio setting to family and friends.
Course components
- Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life a written text for live performance.
Stage Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a scripted, live performance.
Performance Skill: Experiment with specific voice and movement choices to influence character and performance.
Rehearsal and Evaluation: Learn how to rehearse and gain feedback through a development and rehearsal process.
Prerequisites
- This is a 16 week course and students must be available to attend every session. End of course feedback and project participation is dependent on reliable attendance. Students can apply for attendance exemption in exceptional circumstances, applications must be made in advance to the supervising course manager.
- Students enrolled in this course must have participated in at least three NIDA term or holiday courses prior to attending this course OR be able to provide evidence of appropriate training at a comparable institution.

- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
- Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
- If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
- NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
- Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.

- Discount is only applicable when booking both semesters within the same calendar year.

Other Information
Term NIDA courses at TAFE Brisbane are held in the Performing Arts Block (block C, please see PDF campus map at the bottom of this page) of the complex, or surrounding classrooms. For all NIDA Open classes, please meet your tutor at the front entrance to the Performing Arts Block before each class. For youth classes, parents collecting children after class should meet them at the front entrance rather than the classroom; children will be supervised at the front entrance till parents arrive. If you are running late to collect your child, please contact NIDA on 02 9697 7600.
There is paid on-street parking in and around the campus that is patrolled by the Brisbane City Council. Please see the street signage for parking restrictions.
There are also several commercial parking facilities within walking distance, including South Bank Parklands, the Convention Centre and the cinema.
