Filmmaking: Science Fiction @ Carriageworks, Grades 7-10

Holiday course

Explore time travel, parallel universes and extra-terrestrial life forms in this week long filmmaking intensive. Allow the unique architecture of Carriageworks to inspire your story as you develop your filmmaking skills and uncover the techniques of on location shooting. Collaborate with a group of young NIDA artists and a mentor filmmaker to develop original characters and scene work around a short film concept. Perform in and receive a copy of your film.

Course components

  • Acting Technique – Explore characterisation and build technical skills through improvisation and the application of NIDA acting technique to an on-screen performance.
  • Collaboration – Engage in a group creative process to develop an original short film, assume a variety of roles in a creative and production capacity.
  • Filmmaking – Develop, rehearse and shoot a short film.
  • Production Planning – Introduction to the challenges of shooting ‘on-location’. Learn about consistency of performance, location scouting and working within the limitations of the environment.

  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please ensure that you have given a valid email and mobile number as any course changes will be communicated via email or sms.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Participants must provide their own lunch, including snacks and drinks.
  • Children attending primary school grade equivalent holiday courses must be signed in and out by a parent or guardian.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3–6 and Grades 7–10 in their breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
