Summer Story: Filmmaking, Grades 11-12

Holiday course

Ice cream and sandcastles, sunsets and road trips…summer is a time of excitement, transformation and growth. This year, collaborate with a NIDA tutor to create an original summer story for the big screen. Learn film acting, writing and production techniques then shoot your short film adventure at iconic locations across Sydney. Share scenes from your short film with the NIDA community. All participants receive a copy of their short film.

Course components

  • Acting Technique: Explore characterisation and build technical skills through improvisation and the application of NIDA acting technique to an on-screen performance.
  • Collaboration: Engage in a group creative process to develop an original short film, assume variety of roles in a creative and production capacity.
  • Filmmaking: Develop, rehearse and shoot a short film.
  • Production Planning: Introduction to the challenges of shooting ‘on-location’. Learn about consistency of performance, location scouting and working within the limitations of the environment.

  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please ensure that you have given a valid email and mobile number as any course changes will be communicated via email or sms.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Participants must provide their own lunch, including snacks and drinks.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11–12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
