Designers Residency

For adults 18+ years

Commencing Monday 8 January 2024

Develop the skills to design boldly and imaginatively for live and recorded performance.

Investigate the principles of set and costume design, and understand how to realise the visual world of a performance in a theatrical setting. Develop an original concept using sketches, drawings, collages and model boxes and discover ways to shape your imaginative responses to create effective design choices for screen.

Customise your residency and train with us for two or three weeks, details outlined below:

Course components

Week one: Monday 8 January – Friday 12 January, 10:00am–5:00pm

Research and analyse a script for the purpose of concept development. Apply the principles of effective costume and set design for live performance. Learn how to define your role as a designer to build the visual narrative that aligns with the director’s brief.

Week two: Monday 15 January – Friday 19 January, 10:00am–5:00pm

Develop your concept for a set text and undertake technical exercises related to costume-making or model-building to realise elements of your design.

Optional week three: Sunday 21 January – Thursday 25 January, 10:00am–5:00pm

Develop an appreciation of screen language and explore visual storytelling. Adapt your design concept into a presentation for a screen context.

Important information

  • Please read our cancellation and transfer policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear unrestrictive and comfortable clothing for all performance related course.
  • Please wear closed in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • It is compulsory to wear closed-toe footwear in our Design and Technical courses, and any classes which take place in the Reg Grundy Studio.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.

Application Information

Entry to NIDA Residencies is by selection. Please enrol in the class below to lodge your application. The deadline for applications is the Friday 8 December 2023.

  • All applications will be considered within 10 workings days and the outcome of your application will be advised by e-mail.
  • You will receive a post enrolment form via email after your application. Please submit information about your previous experience and what you hope to gain from attending the course in this form.
  • NIDA Open will select participants based on this information. If you are successful you will receive a link to pay the remainder of the course fee. Group size will be restricted to ensure individual attention.
