Acting on Screen Grades 9-10, NIDA Kensington

Practical skill-based learning in the performing arts led by industry experts with a focus on personal and creative development.

Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique

Term 1, 2020: Castaways

Live off an imagined landscape and travel to a remote island location as you fight for survival. Using the founding principles of improvisation technique, join forces and create a new reality TV show. Compete in spontaneous challenges for rewards and immunity from elimination at Tribal Council. Strategise your way to success as your team attempts to get someone out of the game.

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Utilise improvisation skills to build a screen performance.
  • Collaboration: Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a project.
  • Craft: Participate in improvised scene work to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.

Term 2, 2020: And Action!

Investigate the reality and understand the ‘smoke and mirrors’ behind action sequences on screen. Find the truth in the most fantastical action adventure plots and create an exciting character to keep your audience on the edge of their seats.

Course components

  • Technique: Practice acting to camera techniques.
  • Character Development: Develop and record a character from a scripted action and adventure scene.
  • Physical Performance: Learn and apply fundamental movement technique for the actor.

Term 3, 2020: Scenes of the Strange and Eccentric

Work in a group to write, film, and star in a scene of contrasting shades, inspired by Tim Burton’s gothic and endearing characters. Explore the dark and light sides of other-worldliness and create a memorable lone-hero for cinematic history.

Course components

  • Character Development: Develop a unique character for performance.
  • Collaboration: Work in a group, incorporate shared ideas into a new, recorded performance work.
  • Screen Writing: Devise and script original scenes for screen.

Term 4, 2020: Act Your Age

Be the best You on screen and extend your command in front of the camera. Explore and shoot scenes from contemporary films and television programs, like The Perfect Date, Moonrise Kingdom and The Sun is Also a Star. Get serious about playing a part written for performers your age.

Course components

  • Acting Technique: Practice and refine acting to camera techniques.
