Acting on Screen Grades 4-6, Melbourne

Practical skill-based learning in the performing arts led by industry experts with a focus on personal and creative development.

Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique

Term 1, 2021: Take 2

Experience the essentials of on-screen acting as you discover the role improvisation plays in the rehearsal and performance process. Develop your ability to create original characters with confidence and spontaneity. Finally, learn how to embody these characters for a screen context.

Course components

  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
  • Spontaneity: Use improvisation in a screen performance. Apply improvisation techniques to the development of a new rehearsed work.
  • Performance: Practice movement and performance skills through physical games, exercises and training.

Term 2, 2021: Beyond Words

Be inspired by the mischievous adventures of Pascal and his large red balloon as you create your own silent-movie scene. Leave text behind and float above the world as you know it, discovering ways to convey a simple plot using key, physical-entry points.

Course components

  • Storytelling: Develop stories, ideas and fun adventures on screen with others in your group
  • Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a screen performance.
  • Physical Awareness: Practice and apply fundamental movement techniques for the actor including alignment, presence and spatial relationships for screen.

Term 3, 2021: Reel School

Fitting in has never been easy, and it’s even harder when you’re the new kid in school. Bring humour and drama to the big screen as you navigate the tricky social sphere of it’s hallways. Learn the foundations of screen writing and enjoy performing the quirky characters of your classroom.

Course components

  • Character Development: Develop a unique character for performance.
  • Collaboration: Work in a group, incorporate shared ideas into a new, recorded performance work.
  • Screen Writing: Devise and script original scenes for screen.

Term 4, 2021: Same, Same But Different

Work with famous movie moments and see what happens when you recreate them keeping the text but reimagining the context. Study scenes and explore their given circumstances as you learn the importance of context in spoken words. Work with a NIDA Open tutor to film your scenes and create a whole new world!

Course components

  • Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life a short written text for live performance.
  • Voice: Assume a variety of roles in a creative development process to generate new ideas for a live presentation.
  • Physical Awareness: Practice and apply fundamental movement technique for the actor including alignment, presence and spatial relationships for screen.
