Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique

Term 1, 2020: Keep Rolling

When the cameras are still rolling, an actors intuition can make for the best laughs, tears, and surprises. Using improvisation and character development exercises, take charge of the scene and create your own iconic and original on-screen moments. Learn new acting approaches that guide your impulse and channel your creative process into an award-winning, cinematic experience.

Course components

  • Performance Craft: Participate in improvised scene work to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.
  • Spontaneity: Utilise improvisation skills to build a screen performance.
  • Characters: Experiment with vocal and physical expression to create an original character.

Term 2, 2020: Beyond Words

Be inspired by the mischievous adventures of Pascal and his large red balloon as you create your own silent-movie scene. Leave text behind and float above the world as you know it, discovering ways to convey a simple plot using key, physical-entry points.

Course components

  • Storytelling: Develop stories, ideas and fun adventures on screen with others in your group
  • Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a screen performance.
  • Physical Awareness: Practice and apply fundamental movement techniques for the actor including alignment, presence and spatial relationships for screen.

Term 3, 2020: Coming at you Live…

Get noticed and shine on screen as you and a team of fellow creatives make and shoot your very own talk-show. Blend satirical news stories with larger than life characters to fill a new segment of daytime TV. Develop the technical skills to bring it to life in front of a live audience.

Course components

  • Character Development: Connect to the inner-world of a character.
  • Collaboration: Work in a group, incorporate shared ideas into a new, recorded performance work.
  • Film Making: Learn how to develop and shoot a short film.

Term 4, 2020: It’s Alive!

Be transported to another realm as you jump into supernatural spaces for screen acting. Investigate scripts from movies like, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Frankenweenie, and Paranorman. Discover approaches to interpreting spine-tingling scenes and investigate the eerie given circumstances within them.

Course components

  • Acting: Apply NIDA acting techniques to a short screen presentation.
  • Text Analysis: Apply screen-acting skills to analyse and interpret the events of a scene.
  • Contemporary Practice: Explore and apply contemporary screen practices from Australia and around the world.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
