Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique

Term 1, 2019: It’s a Camera Game

Use improvisation skills to train your brain for fun and engaging screen performances everytime! Learn how spontaneity can sharpen your listening and interpersonal skills to bring your best performance to well known TV and film scripts. Get comfortable accessing your creativity and show off your new found on screen charisma to family and friends at the end of term.

Course components

  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
  • Spontaneity: Apply improvisation techniques to a scripted on-screen performance.
  • Acting technique: Learn and apply fundamental screen acting techniques.

Term 2, 2019: American Marvels

Activate the power within you as you get ready for action in this blockbuster packed course! Stretch your vocal and physical skills and explore the techniques required to successfully embody your favourite superhero. Apply acting technique to a range of camera exercises and learn scenes from popular American superhero films to perform for friends and family.

Course components

  • Voice: Work on scenes with accents.
  • Physical awareness: Developing skills to embody dialect.
  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting and technical screenmaking exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.

Term 3, 2019: Big Bang Acting

Accelerate your performance on-screen with an unexpected collison of instinct and technique! Work with a NIDA tutor as you learn and apply reliable acting techniques to expand the inner-life of a character. Develop and shoot key scenes from your original short film, showcase your new skills and let your character shine on screen!

Course components

  • Character Development: Connect to the inner-world of a character.
  • Collaboration: Work in a group, incorporate shared ideas into a new, recorded performance work.
  • Film Making: Learn how to develop and shoot a short film.

Term 4, 2019: Australian TV – Fastforward/Rewind

Work with a NIDA director on a range of Australian television scripts as you re-create scenes from some of the best contemporary and classic Australian Film and TV shows. Get camera ready as you learn the technical tricks required to give a perfect on-screen performance every time.

Course components

  • Acting Technique: Learn and practice acting to camera techniques.
  • Text Analysis: Apply screen-acting skills to analyse and interpret the events of a scene.
  • Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a performance.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish
