Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique

Term 4, 2018: Casting Club

Discover techniques for approaching screen tests and auditions for screen. Select, prepare and learn short scenes suitable for castings. You will also develop skills in recording voiceovers for television commercials and movie trailers.

Course components

  • Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life a short written text for live performance.
  • Voice: Assume a variety of roles in a creative development process to generate new ideas for a live presentation
  • Physical Awareness: Practice and apply fundamental movement technique for the actor including alignment, presence and spatial relationships for screen.

Term 1, 2019: Here’s Looking at You

Some of the most memorable on-screen moments in film history are nowhere to be found in the script! Now is your chance to join legends of the big screen as you spice up your on-camera presence and take everyone on set by surprise. Improvise beyond the life of a scene and take your favourite characters off the page as you spontaneously imagine their circumstances before and after. Add your personal touch to well-known TV and film scripts as you learn how to honour the writing while remaining free to play within it. Present your work to family and friends at the end of the term.

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Utilise improvisation skills to build a screen performance.
  • Acting technique: Explore characterisation through building technical skills such as making and accepting offers, actions and objectives.
  • Ensemble: Work as part of a team on recorded performance exercises.

Term 2, 2019: Showdowns on Set

From the wild west to Wonder Woman, be captured by stories and characters from your favrouite action and adventure films! Inspired by the good, the bad and the ugly characters of your favourite films, create, shoot and star in a screen showdown scene of your own. Through a range of skill-based physical and actor training, battle your personal bandits to free the outlaw within you. Arm yourself with vocal clarity and physical dexterity as you prepare for a contest of heightened nature.

Course components

  • Physical awareness: Develop physical skills to move and shape character of a set period.
  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting and technical screenmaking exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
  • Voice: Work on scenes with accents

Term 3, 2019: Time-Warp and Replay

If given a chance, would you go back and guide your younger self towards a more fullfilling and successful future? Would you rekindle a broken frienship and try to right every wrong you made? Accelerate your performance on-screen with a life altering adventure. Inspired by time-warp movies like Back To The Future and Freaky Friday, work in a group to create scenes for your own TV pilot of time-warp drama. Drop back into a different age using relaible acting techniques to expand the inner-life of a character. Adapt to new worlds and time zones as you refine your skills for acting on-screen.

Course components

  • Collaboration: Work in a group, incorporate shared ideas into a new, recorded performance work.
  • Screen Writing: Devise and script original scenes for screen.
  • Character Development: Deepen your connection to character as you explore their personal histroy.

Term 4, 2019: Australian TV – Fastforward/Rewind

Work with a NIDA director and a range of Australian television scripts as you re-create scenes from some of the best contemporaty and classic Australian Film and TV shows. Get camera ready as you learn the technical tricks required to give a perfect on-screen performance every time.

Course components

  • Acting Technique: Practice and refine acting to camera techniques.
  • Text Analysis: Apply screen-acting skills to analyse and interpret the events of a scene.
  • Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a performance.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
