Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Script Work and Technique
Term four Devising and Contemporary Practice

Term 1, 2018: Documentary Mockumentary?

Immerse yourself in ‘Mockumentary’ genre as you develop a unique character, create original scenes and discover how to present these scenes to camera. Perform short scenes in a new and unique screen creation. Present your original mockumentary to family and friends.

Course components

  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
  • Spontaneity: Use improvisation in live and screen performance.
  • Performance: Practice movement and performance skills through physical games, exercises and training.

Term 2, 2018: Gag Reel

Extend your physical skills as we explore slap stick comedy. Taking inspiration from artists such as Rowan Atkinson and Charlie Chaplin, master the world of physical comedy on screen. Utilise your technical requirements of being hilarious and present your routine to an audience at the end of the course.

Course components

  • Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short, live presentation.
  • Physical Awareness: Take command of your physical presence on stage. Practice movement and performance skills through physical games, exercises and training.
  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.

Term 3, 2018: Stars and Stripes

Collaborate with a director on a range of contemporary American television and film scripts. Explore characters from a variety of genres and redefine your on screen performance skills.

Course components

  • Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a performance.
  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
  • Collaboration: Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a project.

Term 4, 2018: Casting Club

Advance your techniques for approaching screen tests and auditions for screen. Select, prepare and learn monologues and short scenes suitable for castings. You will also develop skills in recording voiceovers for television commercials and movie trailers.

Course components

  • Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life a short written text for screen performance.
  • Character Development: Develop a character from a scripted scene for screen performance.
  • Vocal Expression: Participate in games and exercises that promote vocal expressiveness and confidence.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.

  • Discount is only applicable when booking all four terms within the same calendar year.

  • If students do not attend all four terms, the discount is no longer valid.
