Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 1, 2019: You’re not serious?

Use the skills of improvisation to create unique comic characters. Explore how saying ‘YES’ to others can help you extend your own ideas while working in a fun group collaboration. Learn skills in clowning and physical comedy and improve your confidence responding ‘off the cuff’ to your audience and class mates.

Course components

  • Craft: Apply the fundamentals of improvisation to create your own comic characters and scenarios.
  • Skills: Learn the basics of physical comedy and prop gags.
  • Ensemble: Develop your confidence responding to the offers of your class mates and working as part of an ensemble.

Term 2, 2019: Poetic License

Explore the world of performance poetry and have a go at writing your own! Use your voice and body to express and perform a range of poems from limericks to lyricals and even a haiku! Use music to help your performance and explore the deeper meaning of poems.

Course components

  • Vocal Expression: Apply good vocal technique to help unlock the meaning of different poems.
  • Physicality: Explore physical gesture in story telling.
  • Performance Craft: Use music and other stimulus to uncover the deeper meaning of the text.

Term 3, 2019: Making A Short Film

Explore acting on screen and work with your tutor to create your very own short film. Use a range of contemporary devising techniques to help you create your own comedy and drama scenes for the screen. Use props and costumes to film your scenes then show your film back to your friends and family at the end of term.

Course components

  • Devising Techniques: Explore the different ways to create scenes from your own ideas.
  • Acting Technique: Learn the differences between acting for stage and screen and apply your screen technique to your own scenes.
  • Technical Elements: Experience the technical demands of screen acting including hitting your marks and eyelines.

Term 4, 2019: Tales from the Grimm

Hone your acting skills in scripts from the famous Gothic stories of the Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Anderson. Bring your own performance style to some of the world’s most well-known tales. Learn how to connect to a character and use your imagination to bring the words on the page to life.

Course components

  • Text Analysis: Connect your thoughts and imagination to the words in the script to make your own unique performance.
  • Character Development: Have fun creating exciting and sometimes terrifying characters from these gothic tales.
  • Performance: Put it all together in a performance of your scripts for friends and family.

  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook or electronic device and a bottle of water to all classes.
