NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 1, 2021: So Random

You know those days when everything seems strange? Berserk bus drivers, frenetic friends, turbulent teachers. Explore life’s awkward moments as you develop short and long form improvisational skills to fill even the most uncomfortable silences. Explore real life random characters that populate those odd days as you develop skills to stay in the moment (odd as they may be).

Course components

  • Craft: Participate in improvised scene work to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.
  • Spontaneity: Engage your imagination and develop lateral thinking skills through spontaneity and improvisation exercies.
  • Ensemble: Work as part of a team to achieve a shared goal through improvised performance.

Term 2, 2021: Tell Me A Story

Great actors are great storytellers. Explore NIDA voice and movement training and apply technique to monologues and scenes to create truthful and engaging characters for the stage. Tell your character’s tale to an invited audience at the end of term.

Course components

  • Voice: Introduction to how the voice works, exploration of fundamental vocal performance techniques.
  • Language and text: Using punctuation, meter, rhythm and rhyme, analyse and explore written text in live performance.
  • Performance Skill: Experiment with specific voice and movement choices to influence character and performance.

Term 3, 2021: Super WhoMan?

We all know the A List – Superman, Wonder Woman and The Flash, but what about the lesser known superheroes – Knitting Man, Easily Distracted Woman and The Crash? Uncover the superpowers of these underappreciated Super WhoMans as you devise scenes that put these marvels at the centre of the action. Collaborate with industry experts to explore contemporary and physical theatre techniques to develop a short, original live presentation.

Course components

  • Characters: Experiment with vocal and physical expression to create an original character.
  • Creative Voice: Assume a variety of roles in a creative development process to generate new ideas for a presentation.
  • Collaboration: Work with a group to develop a new concept into a short presentation

Term 4, 2021: Making Connections

Immerse yourself in new plays for young people from near and far. Develop your on stage skills as you learn how to investigate, analyse and interpret the written word. Connect voice, movement and acting skills to create fully realised characters in scenes and monolgues from these exciting plays. Develop onstage presence as you showcase your scripted work for family and friends.

Course components
