Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year. Children must be enrolled in full time formal education to participate in these courses.

NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 4, 2018: Paper Bag Hero

Take destiny into your own hands and become the hero of your own story. Inspired by the famous children’s book Paper Bag Princess, create wild and wonderful adventures with unimaginable problems from which you have to rescue yourself. Inspire your family and friends with a short presentation of your Paper Bag Hero adventures at the end of the course.

Course components

  • The Written Word: Learn how to turn a story or play into live performance.
  • Stage Craft: Practice live performance skills; speaking in front of an audience, basic stage craft, audience and performance etiquette.
  • Performance: Rehearse and present a short live performance.

Term 1, 2019: The Thinks You Can Do

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!” Inspired by the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss, create classroom adventures and madcap characters using improvisation technique and your own fabulous imagination. Share your ‘thinks’ with your family and friends at the end of term.

Course components

  • Freeing the Imagination: Participate in fun and engaging exercises and activities that promote spontaneity, creative expression and self-confidence.
  • Technique: Introduction to improvisation concepts.
  • Characters: Experiment with vocal and physical expression to create an original character.

Term 2, 2019: Sounds of Imagination

Join your NIDA friends on a journey to discover the rhythms, sounds and characters that create the extraordinary music of everyday life. Peek into the colourful world of Alison Lesters beloved story books, including Imagine and The Magic Beach as you use your voice and body to create soundscapes and movement stories from your favourite pages. Develop your own real life adventures and wondrous imaginings with your NIDA tutor to create a fun, short, live presentation.

Course components

  • Vocal Expression: Participate in fun and engaging exercises and activities that promote vocal expressiveness and confidence.
  • Collaboration: Engage with and develop the ideas of others in your class.
  • Performance Skill: Experiment with voice and movement choices as part of a short, live presentation.

Term 3, 2019: Where in the World?

Journey to the far reaches of the globe to hear stories from around the world. Inspired by the traditional stories from different cultures, meet the people and see the places that make up the creative landscape of our amazing planet. Devise a story to reflect your trek around the globe and share it with family and friends.

Course components

  • Creative Voice: Participate in fun and engaging exercises and activities to develop new ideas and learn how to share them with others.
  • Storytelling: Explore stories, ideas and adventures through group and individual improvisation.
  • Performance and collaboration: Work with others to build a creative idea into a short, devised presentation.

Term 4, 2019: Land of the Giants

Use your vocal, physical and acting skills to create Giant Tales inspired by famous giants such as Roald Dahl’s BFG or the giant at the top of Jack’s beanstalk. Create your own character, rehearse scenes and present a mini showcase for your friends and family.

  • Performance: Rehearse and present a short live performance.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring a bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.

  • Discount is only applicable when booking all four terms within the same calendar year.
