Screen Study Grades 11-12, NIDA Kensington

Screen Study provides a supportive and creatively challenging environment for young artists serious about their artistic development. Each course runs across a semester (two terms) and students work towards group acting on screen outcomes supported by NIDA’s creative leaders. Course work includes an introduction to a variety of acting on screen disciplines and technical skills to help students develop their passion for performing arts in a holistic approach to acting and screen training. Screen Study is the perfect vehicle to apply your screen skills and extend your creative training!

Students engage in a personalised assessment and feedback process with their tutor at the end of every semester, providing them with the information and support they need to decide the next step in their creative education.

Semester 1, 2021 – Acting for Screen: Through the Genre Lens

From nail-biting adventures to breath-taking fantasies, versatility and precision are required from screen actors delivering those memorable performances. Hone your performance technique, explore a variety of genre and character journeys, and reveal your inner action hero as you step into the shoes of characters from some of the most iconic film franchises and TV drama series. Receive feedback on your acting technique and on-screen presence from a NIDA expert across the 16 week course and showcase your final scenes to an invited audience.

Course Components

  • Acting technique: Learn and apply extended screen acting techniques.
  • Accents: Practice and apply standard accent training to a recorded screen performance.
  • Physical Performance: Learn and apply fundamental stage combat techniques.
  • Contemporary Practice: Explore and apply contemporary screen practices from Australia and around the world.
  • Text interpretation: Interpret film and television scripts and develop an authentic character for the screen.

Semester 2, 2021 – Industry Practice: TV Pilot Project

Learn the ins-and outs of series TV production. Develop technical skills both in front and behind the camera as you create and shoot your original series TV pilot. From call sheets and coverage, P.O.V’s and pickups, to booms and backlighting, gain industry knowledge as your ideas are shot into reality. Under the guidance of industry professionals this 16 week project will challenge, extend and develop your understanding of the preparation, rigour and discipline essential to working on screen. Share your project work at an informal ‘cast and crew’ screening in the final week of the course.

Course Components

  • Collaboration: Engage in a creative process to develop a screen presentation, assume variety of roles in a production capacity.
  • Spontaneity: Use improvisation technique in both a devised and scripted screen performance.
  • Physical awareness: Understand the demands of accent on the physicality of the character.
  • Technique: Extend your knowledge of live and recorded practice to optimize your on-screen performance.
  • Film Making: Work with a writer and director to develop and record an original TV drama.


  • This is a 16 week course and students must be available to attend every session. End of course feedback and project participation is dependent on reliable attendance. Students can apply for attendance exemption in exceptional circumstances, applications must be made in advance to the supervising course manager.
  • Students enrolled in this course must have participated in at least three Acting on Screen NIDA term or holiday courses prior to attending this course OR be able to provide evidence of appropriate training at a comparable institution.

  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
