Practical, skill based learning led by industry experts across a range of performing arts disciplines. NIDA courses for Grades 11-12 students are designed to support and inspire young people at any stage of their creative development.

Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term One, 2019: Singular Sensations

Master your musical theatre skills and make your audience beg for more in this performance based course. Learn the skills to spontaneously create dialogue, action, story, and character. Receive support from industry professionals as you advance your singing, movement, and acting repertoire. Prepare to take the spotlight as you move centre stage and perform for family and friends in a showstopping number.

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Use improvisation in live performance. Apply improvisation techniques to the development of a new rehearsed work.
  • Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short, live presentation.
  • Stage Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a performance.

Term Two, 2019: If I Only Had the Steps

Trust your instincts, close your eyes and take a leap! Leave the world behind you as you fly to new heights, hitting the high notes in this musical inspired extravaganza. Be challenged by newly choreographed sequences and learn the skills to choreograph your own musical routine. This course includes a singing intensive facilitated by a professional vocal coach.

Course components

  • Body and Dance: Work with a NIDA choreographer to grow co-ordination and develop physical confidence and dance technique.
  • Voice and Song: Apply singing techniques and broaden your vocal range.
  • Performance skill: Discover the performative element to choreographed scenes.

Term Three, 2019: A Broadway State of Mind

Write the soundtrack to your own life story! Work with an ensemble to create an original musical performance using your life experiences as your greatest inspiration. Be inspired by a variety of musical theatre styles as you open your mind to the storytelling possibilities found in your everyday world. Collaborate with the company to write, create and perform scenes which lead into songs and showcase a self-portrait inspired musical to family and friends.

Course components

  • Technique: Learn and apply musical theatre techniques.
  • Creative Expression: Take a variety of roles in a creative development process to generate ideas and concepts for a new live presentation.
  • Performance Practice: Apply acting and singing practice to a short devised musical presentation.

Term Four, 2019: Battle of the Ballads

Put on your musical gloves and get in the ring! This course is an essential for all musical theatre lovers. Focusing on the autonomous performer, this course explores the techniques required to break down a song as text. Learn how to communicate the meaning of the story through the lyrics and heighten your musical performance. Understand the essentials of staging a solo song, learn how to own the room and immerse yourself in the depth of character. Uncover the secrets to your x-factor and ready yourself to bring down the house.

Course components

  • Text interpretation: Analyse and interpret a scripted song and bring it to life by applying acting technique.
  • Creative Impulse: Develop performance craft and confidence in your creative choices.
  • Staging: Consider staging techniques and learn musical performance stagecraft.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
