Learning framework
Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.
Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.
NIDA Open Singing and Acting courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:
Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging
Term 1, 2023: Horton Sings a Song
Let your voice soar and imagination fly as you learn to stay in the moment finding the magic of now! Inspired by Seussical The Musical, apply contemporary improvisation techniques in creating your own wacky world of loveable characters. Enhance your listening skills and grow in confidence while you create and develop short acting and musical scenes steeped in imaginative wonder.
Course components
- Freeing the Imagination: Participate in improvisation exercises that promote spontaneity, creative expression and self-confidence.
Voice and Song: Learn how the voice works, develop confidence with singing technique and performance.
Performance Craft: Participate in improvised scene work and singing exercises to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.
Term 2, 2023: What A Wonderful World
Embark on an adventure to the magical musical worlds of The Wiz, Peter Pan and Wonderland. Develop vocal and movement skills to embody the wonderful and wacky characters from these fantastic landscapes and develop scenes and songs to share at the end of term.
Course components
- Voice and Song: Apply singing technique to develop confidence in front of a live audience.
Physical Awareness: Practice basic dance skills through physical games, exercises and movement training.
Performance Skill: Experiment with specific voice and physical choices to influence character, vocal quality and performance.
Term 3, 2023: A Thoroughly Modern Musical
Storytelling meets contemporary music! Develop your singing and acting skills as you work with your NIDA Open ensemble to create a unique mini jukebox musical. Learn how to develop characters and devise scenes to tell stories inspired by songs from your favourite playlist.
Course components
- Ensemble: Work as part of a team to develop a shared creative vision.
Text Interpretation: Bring to life a short written musical text for live performance.
Storytelling: Explore stories, character journeys and creative problem solving through group and individual improvisation.
Term 4, 2023: Smells Like Tween Spirit
Pledge allegiance to the band and unleash your inner Rockstar. Study selected scenes and songs from School of Rock and bring them to life in a rock-sensation like no other. Embody your inner guitar-hero and perform your chart-topping numbers for family and friends.
Course components
- Staging: Consider staging techniques and learn musical performance stagecraft.
Text Interpretation: Unpack and communicate the meaning and story of your favourite rock songs.
Performance: Apply acting, singing and movement practice to a short scripted musical presentation.
Important information
- Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
- Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
- If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
- NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
- Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.

- Discount is only applicable when booking all four terms within the same calendar year.
- Discount is not available online. Please book over the phone by calling the office on 1300 450 417 to receive the discount.
- If students do not attend all four terms, the discount is no longer valid.
