Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Singing and Acting courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 4, 2019: Musicalicious and Delicious

Get your Golden Ticket to this dream factory of delectable delights! Focus on performance craft as you hone your skills and use reliable NIDA acting techniques to improve your singing, dancing and acting. Rehearse scenes and work on the music from your ultimate, favourite shows like Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The Lion King and Wicked. Perform your favourite musical moment for family and friends at the end of the course.

Course components

  • Performance: Apply acting, singing and movement practice to a short scripted, musical presentation.
  • Staging: Consider staging techniques and learn musical performance stagecraft.
  • Acting Technique: Explore characterisation and build technical skills through the application of contemporary acting techniques to a musical theatre performance.

Term 1, 2020: iSong Shuffle

Improvisation and singing skills combine in this fun and fast paced term. Learn to play, repeat, and shuffle your performance technique to navigate the unexpected. Experiment with fundamental acting, improvisation and singing skills as you develop the confidence to sing out loud and perform in any situation.

Course components

  • Freeing the Imagination: Participate in games and exercises that promote spontaneity, creative expression and self-confidence.
  • Voice and Song: Learn how the voice works, develop confidence with singing technique and performance.
  • Craft: Participate in improvised scene work and singing exercises to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.

Term 2, 2020: If I Only Had the Steps

Close your eyes, trust your instincts and take a leap! Leave the world behind you as you fly to new heights, hitting the high notes in this musical inspired extravaganza. Be challenged by contemporary musical theatre songs and learn the skills to choreograph your own musical routine.

Course components

  • Body and Dance: Develop co-ordination and develop physical confidence and dance technique.
  • Voice and Song: Apply singing techniques and broaden your vocal range.
  • Performance skill: Discover the performative element to choreographed scenes.

Term 3, 2020: On Broadway

Take your turn in the spotlight and perform in well-known Broadway musical numbers. Use visual storytelling techniques to create short original scenes inspired by Broadway musicals, and develop a short muscial theatre presentation.

Course components

  • Contemporary practice: Devise visually exciting scenes using contemporary approaches to creating work.
  • Voice and Song: Apply singing technique to develop confidence in front of a live audience.
  • Staging: Consider staging techniques for musical performance.

Term 4, 2020: Smells Like Tween Spirit

Pledge allegiance to the band and unleash your inner Rockstar. Study selected scenes and songs from School of Rock and bring them to life in a rock-sensation like no other. Embody your inner guitar-hero and perform your chart-topping numbers for your NIDA friends.

Course components

  • Staging: Consider staging techniques and learn musical performance stagecraft.
  • Text Interpretation: Unpack and communicate the meaning and story of your favourite rock songs.
  • Performance: Apply acting, singing and movement practice to a short scripted musical presentation.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
