Practical, skill based learning led by industry experts across a range of performing arts disciplines. NIDA courses for Grade 7-10 students are designed to support and inspire young people at any stage of their creative development.

Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term One, 2020: iSong Shuffle

Improvisation and singing skills combine in this fun and fast paced term. Learn to play, repeat, and shuffle your performance technique to navigate the unexpected. Experiment with fundamental acting, improvisation and singing skills as you develop the confidence to sing out loud and perform in any situation.

Course components

  • Freeing the Imagination: Participate in games and exercises that promote spontaneity, creative expression and self-confidence.
  • Voice and Song: Learn how the voice works, develop confidence with singing technique and performance.
  • Craft: Participate in improvised scene work and singing exercises to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.

Term Two, 2020: Broadway Deity

Sing and dance your way back to ancient Greece and reclaim the stories of your favourite mythical and historical characters. Inspired by the pop-musical Hadestown, experiment with physical and vocal choices to bring courageous characters back to life. Collaborate with your ensemble as you reinvent oral tradition and create an odyssey to remember.

Course components

  • Voice and Song: Apply singing technique to develop confidence in front of a live audience.
  • Performance skill: Experiment with specific physical choices to influence character, vocal quality and performance.
  • Creative Expression: Take a variety of roles in a creative development process to generate ideas and concepts for a new live presentation.

Term Three, 2020: The Strange, the Wonderful, and the Sci Fi

Inspired by the mega-computer loving characters in Broadways Be More Chill, prepare yourself for some spacey sagas as you improvise your way through the hallways of a new Sci-Fi – teen musical. Let out your inner-geek and sing, dance, and act your way to new dimensions.

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Use improvisation in live performance. Apply improvisation techniques to the development of a new rehearsed work.
  • Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short, singing and acting presentation.
  • Stage Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a performance.

Term Four, 2020: Battle of the Ballads

Uncover the secrets to your x-factor and ready yourself to bring down the house. Focusing on the autonomous performer, this course explores the techniques required to break down a song as text. This course is an essential for all Musical Theatre Lovers.

Course components

  • Text interpretation: Analyse and interpret a scripted song and bring it to life by applying acting technique.
  • Creative Impulse: Develop performance craft and confidence in your creative choices.
  • Staging: Consider staging techniques and learn musical performance stagecraft.

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
