Practical skill-based learning in musical theatre performance led by industry experts, designed to support and inspire young people at any stage of their creative development.

Term One, 2019: Shake, Rattle, and Jelly Roll!

Get your upstyles ready, your hair gel out, and set your inhibitions free! You can’t stop the beat in this energetic and buzzing course inspired by everyone’s favourite musical, Hairspray. Use improvisation techniques and combine them with singing skills as you spontaneously collaborate to create a show within a show. Rehearse and prepare a short musical presentation for family and friends at the end of the course.

Course components

  • Freeing the Imagination: Grow confidence through exercises that promote spontaneity and creative expression.
  • Voice and Song: Explore vocal range and dexterity with singing techniques and performance.
  • Collaboration: Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a live presentation.

Term Two, 2019: Lose Your Shoes

Kick off your boots and embrace the music! Move your love for musical performance to the next level. Work with a NIDA movement tutor to develop rhythm and the physical confidence required to ‘sell’ your music theatre performance. No dance training required. This is for young singers and actors looking to find confidence moving to the music. Create a short choreographed presentation for family and friends at the end of the course.

Course components

  • Physical awareness: Develop basic dance skills, co-ordination, and agility through physical technique and movement training.
  • Performance skill: Experiment with specific voice and physical choices to develop character, vocal quality and performance.
  • Stage Craft: Consider the complexity of elements that contribute to the physical realization of a musical performance.

Term Three, 2019: Mysteriously Spooky Cabaret

Turn the ordinary inside out and delight in the spine-tingling spookiness of The Addams Family. Be amused by otherworldliness as you develop skills in singing and acting to re-define techniques of storytelling through song. Transform your physical-being, embracing the wit, enthusiasm, the good and the bad of the characters from our favourite TV family. Develop your own alter-ego for performance as you collaborate and devise a new horror- themed cabaret to showcase before family and friends.

Course components

  • Performance Practice: Apply acting and singing practice to a short devised musical presentation.
  • Voice and Song: Explore and apply singing technique to develop confidence in singing in front of a live audience.
  • Creative Expression: Take a variety of roles in a creative development process to generate ideas and concepts for a new live presentation.

Term Four, 2019: Music, Lyrics, and Books

Tap your feet down the musical time line as we step, jump and turn our way into the Golden Age of Musical Theatre. Work on musical classics of stage and screen. Fully integrate song and dance and bring an intensive focus to story, character development, and dialogue. Perform your favourite musical moment for family and friends at the end of the course.

Course components

  • Text interpretation: Interpret and bring to life through the application of acting technique a short scripted and musical text.
  • Staging: Consider staging techniques, learn and apply performance craft.
  • Performance: Apply acting, singing and movement practice to a short scripted, singing and acting presentation.
