Health and Safety – Face to Face learning

Here’s how NIDA Open is supporting your health and safety and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic once face-to-face classes resume.

At NIDA Kensington Sydney and NIDA Southbank Melbourne we have:

  • Reduced the number of attendees in all NIDA Open classes and limited the presence of staff and other students where possible, practical and safe to do so.
  • Increased cleaning of all areas and in particular frequent use and high touch point areas.
  • Trained and supported staff to ensure best hygiene and safety practice.
  • Reduced the touch points for printed resources; all correspondence, course outlines, certificates and teaching notes where practical will now only be provided digitally, hard copies will be available where necessary or to support inclusion and access.
  • Provided hand sanitiser and appropriate cleaning products for in-class personal and equipment cleaning.
  • Introduced temperature screening – at NIDA Kensington and in some circumstances at NIDA Melbourne you may have your temperature checked upon entering the building. In the event your temperature is 38 deg C or above you will be asked to seek medical advice and not be permitted to enter the building.

At all external venues where NIDA operates we have:

  • Liaised with the venue to ensure they comply with government guidelines around COVID-19 safety and are able to support NIDA best practice standards.
  • Reduced the number of attendees in all NIDA Open classes and limited the presence of staff and other students where possible, practical and safe to do so.
  • Provided hand sanitiser and appropriate cleaning products for in-class personal and equipment cleaning.

Our teaching and management staff will:

  • Ensure they keep accurate attendance records. We need to know where people have been in the event that they report a confirmed case of COVID-19.
  • Ensure all students are properly briefed on and maintain social distancing and hygiene expectations.
  • Actively manage the number of people present in class rooms and common areas at all times.
  • Take your concerns about breach of best practice and safety seriously.

We expect our students to:

  • Help us to keep each other and the wider community safe when accessing our programs.
  • Treat everyone equally and with respect.
  • Not attend a class if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms. By attending a NIDA Open class you agree that you are feeling well and not experiencing any respiratory or flu-like symptoms. If you feel unwell, however mild, do not attend class, seek a COVID-19 test and remain at home until you receive the result and notify NIDA.
  • Take care on public transport – public transport should be avoided if possible during peak times. In the event that you use public transport, please ensure that you observe social distancing and wash your hands thoroughly ASAP after travelling.
  • Maintain good hygiene practices at all times – regular washing/sanitising of hands, cover coughs and sneezes, physical contact or handshakes. If you bring equipment into the classroom, it needs to be sanitised, make sure you continue to sanitise it before and after use.
  • Ensure physical distancing – maintain a distance of at least 1.5m between yourself and other people at all times.
  • Limit your movement before and after class – head directly to your classroom, do not linger in the building before or after class.
  • Limit the people present at class start and finish – adults, please don’t bring other people with you to class unless you need assistance to access the building. Children, we ask that only one carer accompanies children when dropping them off unless additional supervision help is essential. Please leave the premises as soon as your child’s class commences and is in session.
  • Break times – please maintain social distancing during break times, especially when exiting and entering rooms, do not congregate at doorways or in corridors.
  • Food – we recommend that you bring your own packed food and drink as the cafe at NIDA Kensington will not be open and food preparation will not be possible in any location. Please do not share food with others.
