Directing Actors for the Stage

For adults 18 years +

Level: Applied Techniques

Under the supervision of a professional director, work with NIDA trained actors to investigate a variety of methods by which to explore text and elicit outstanding performances.

Course components

  • Examine the dramaturgical aspect of directing. Learn strategies to prepare scenes and run effective rehearsals.
  • Implement directing techniques as you work with NIDA student actors on the rehearsal room floor.
  • Develop your ideas as you collaborate with the creative team including set, sound and lighting designers.


  • Experience in working with actors in a supportive environment whilst being mentored by an industry professional.
  • Confidence in casting and communicating with actors both on and off the rehearsal room floor.
  • Awareness of technical considerations whilst directing for the stage.

  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook or electronic device and a bottle of water to all classes.
