NIDA Open offers short courses for adults across the spectrum of dramatic arts disciplines including acting, presenting, musical theatre, design, technical theatre and stage management, writing and directing.  With offerings in classrooms and online, everyone has access to our world class training

Courses for every level

Beginner

For those with little or no previous experience who are curious to explore performance or performance craft in a fun, safe environment.

Core techniques

Build the fundamental techniques of your chosen craft through practical exercises. 

Applied techniques

Apply and extend existing techniques or hone specific skills to develop your practice. Previous training or experience recommended. 

Advanced techniques

Apply complex techniques within a professional practice model. Previous training and experience essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing for any performance related course. Clothes that restrict movement are inappropriate – no high heels, short skirts or jeans. Wear closed toe shoes that can be removed in the rehearsal room. Design and technical courses may take place in workshop areas or in theatres, and to access these areas you need to wear closed toe footwear (shoes or boots). Students in grades 7-12 should bring a notepad, something to write with and/or a device or tablet to take notes. You will need to bring all of your food and refreshments. There is a cafe open on site. 

  • NIDA arranges your enrolment and tuition. You need to make your own arrangements for travel or, if appropriate, for accommodation. Please call the office to confirm the course is going ahead before confirming your travel bookings. You will need to bring all of your food and refreshments. There is a cafe open on site.

  • NIDA issues a Certificate of Attendance for Adults who attend a course longer than two days. Studio and Residency students receive a Certificate of Achievement.

  • NIDA arranges your course enrolment and tuition. You need to make your own arrangements for food, travel and, if appropriate, accommodation. Please telephone us on 1300 450 417 to confirm the course is going ahead before confirming your travel bookings. 

  • You can contact us one week prior to the commencement of the course to find out who is teaching. Please keep in mind that at times it is necessary for us to make staffing changes at short notice. 

  • The majority of NIDA Open courses are open to all. There are some courses which have been designed to suit people with more advanced skills or experience which is indicated on the course page. Studio and Residency courses are selective and require an audition, interview or written application.
