Learning framework
Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.
Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.
NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:
Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique
Term 1, 2023: Ready for Action!
Get ready for on-set action. Discover how spontaneity plays an important role in bringing on-screen performances to life. Develop improvisation techniques to enhance scene work, learn how to trust your creative instincts, and bring your unique personality to scripts for TV commercials and comedy scenes. Prepare to be fearless and ready for action!
Course components
- Performance Craft: Participate in improvised scene work to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.
Spontaneity: Utilise improvisation skills to build a screen performance.
Characters: Experiment with vocal and physical expression to create an original character.
Term 2, 2023: Where the Wild Kids Are
Tag along with Tarzan or muck around with Mowgli as you express your wild side on screen. Stretch your acting skills as you explore vocal and movement techniques and bring to life beloved wild child characters. Develop your on-screen presence as you work with NIDA friends to navigate the unexpected adventures that lie ahead.
Course components
- Voice - Introduction to how the voice works, exploration of fundamental vocal performance techniques.
Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a screen performance.
Physical Awareness: Practice and apply fundamental movement techniques for the actor including alignment, presence and spatial relationships for screen
Term 3, 2023: Coming at you Live….
Make your mark as you and a team of fellow creatives collaborate to shoot your own talk-show. Blend satirical news stories with larger than life characters to fill a new segment for daytime TV. Explore the technical skills to bring it to life in front of a live audience.
Course components
- Presenting: Understand and apply TV presenting and interview techniques.
Character Development: Develop a unique character for performance.
Ensemble: Work as part of a team to develop a shared creative vision.
Term 4, 2023: Supernatural Screen Sagas
Sneak, creep and crawl into supernatural settings as you investigate scenes from The Spiderwick Chronicles, Frankenweenie, and Paranorman. Discover approaches to interpreting spine-tingling text, investigate the eerie given circumstances and shoot your scenes to share with family and friends.
Course components
- Acting Technique: Learn and practice acting to camera techniques.
Text Analysis: Apply screen-acting skills to analyse and interpret the events of a scene.
Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a performance.
Important information
- Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
- Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
- If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
- NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
- Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.

- Discount is only applicable when booking all four terms within the same calendar year.
