Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique

Term 1, 2021: Let’s Get Reel

Comedy and improvisation collide in the greatest unscripted course yet! Work with your group to create a new Mockumentary bursting with original stories. Learn the skills for creating off-the-cuff characters, dialogue and action in rehearsals. Bring the realness of fictional events to a whole new level as you perform your docucomedy to camera.

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Use improvisation in a screen performance. Apply improvisation techniques to the development of a new rehearsed work.
  • Character Development: Develop a unique character for recorded performance.
  • Collaboration: Work in a group to incorporate new, shared ideas into a recorded performance work.

Term 2, 2021: And Action!

Investigate the reality and understand the ‘smoke and mirrors’ behind action sequences on screen. Find the truth in the most fantastical action adventure plots and create an exciting character to keep your audience on the edge of their seats.

Course components

  • Physical Performance: Learn and apply fundamental movement technique for the actor.
  • Acting technique: Learn and apply fundamental screen acting techniques.
  • Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a screen performance.

Term 3, 2021: B-reel Diaries

Non-linear storyline and elaboate sub-plots? It’s all possible in this dramatised reenaction of real life events. Combine personal experiences with dramatic performance techniques and create a new series sensation. Collaborate with a group of likeminded creatives to reveal some unexpected twists and turns of everyday life and create a story to remember.

Course components

  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
  • Collaboration: Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a project.
  • Character Development: Develop a unique character for recorded performance.

Term 4, 2021: All In A Day’s Audition

Uncover the techniques for approaching screen tests and auditions and get ready for action! Select and prepare monologues and short scenes suitable for castings, unpack the given circumstances and learn how to present them on camera. This term includes a session on how to successfully set up and record a self-test on your smart device for remote auditioning.

Course components

  • Audition Practice: Participate in simulated auditions and screen tests.
  • Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life a short written text for live performance.
  • Technique: Establish a relationship with the camera as you master hitting your mark, eye line techniques and develop an on screen personal presence.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
