Learning framework
Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.
Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.
NIDA Open Public Speaking and Presenting courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:
Term one Improvisation and Presentation Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Staging
Term 1, 2023: Confessions Of A Confident Speaker
We are all born improvisers! Connect with your creative and expressive self in this fast-paced, energetic course. Explore improvisation techniques and develop your ability to think on your feet. Say 'Yes' to endless possibilities, build skills to stay in the moment and master your impromptu thinking. Work in a supportive environment to strengthen your confidence in public speaking and communication.
Course components
- Improvisation: Learn improvisation techniques to enhance your performance.
Confidence: Develop your confidence when speaking in front of an audience.
Presenting: Understand and apply live presenting and interview technique.
Term 2, 2023: The Expressive Presenter
Great speakers engage and excite their audiences with memorable performances. Explore techniques to expand your vocal dexterity and movement skills, and apply your skills to confidently express your ideas. Captivate your invited audience at the end of term.
Course components
- Voice: Learn power charged, vocal warm ups adaptable to a range of situations.
Vocal Expression: Investigate effective vocal technique.
Physical Awareness: Learn the essentials of physical preparation for tension-free alignment and effective breath work.
Term 3, 2023: The Art of Storytelling
Colour your speeches with great storytelling. Discover how to create an engaging performance by applying devising and storytelling techniques to add context to a presentation. Hook your audience everytime as you explore ways to include personal and classic stories to develop inspirational speeches.
Course components
- Communication: Learn strategies to deliver powerful speeches that will engage a variety of audiences.
Writing for Presentation: Discover how to effectively research content and use it to construct a speech.
Storytelling: Explore stories, ideas and adventures through group and individual exercises.
Term 4, 2023: With Passion and Purpose
Celebrate your unique ideas and share what inspires you. Develop techniques to create engaging speeches and speak about ordinary things in interesting ways. Under the guidance of a NIDA expert, choose a subject you are passionate about and develop rehearsal and performance skills to deliver with passion and purpose!
Course components
- Communication: Learn strategies to deliver powerful speeches that will engage a variety of audiences.
Creative Voice: Develop content you are passionate about.
Rehearsal and Evaluation: Learn how to practice and gain feedback through a development and rehearsal process.
Important information
- Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
- Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
- If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
- NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
- Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.

- Discount is only applicable when booking all four terms within the same calendar year.
- Discount is not available online. Please book over the phone by calling the office on 1300 450 417 to receive the discount.
- If students do not attend all four terms, the discount is no longer valid.
