Practical skill based learning in the performing arts led by industry experts with a focus on personal and creative development.

Learning framework

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 1, 2023: Rules of Imagination

Warning - Imagination knows no rules!! Inspired by the picture book The Oopsatoreum by Shaun Tan, turn your greatest imaginings into wild and wonderful scenarios to tickle and delight your imagination. Using improvisation and contemporary storytelling techniques, turn your wildest inventions into stories for a short live presentation for family and friends. What could go wrong?

Course components

Freeing the Imagination: Develop new stories, ideas and adventures through improvisational exercises and techniques.
Ensemble: Work as part of a team to achieve a shared goal through performance.

Term 2, 2023: Pocket Rocket

Travel from stage to space and create your own alien adventures! Using vocal and physical storytelling techniques, explore your unique moonwalk inspired by life on other planets, and create an out-of-this-world soundscape. Guide your family and friends aboard your spaceship at the end of term.

Course components

  • Vocal Expression: Learn how the voice works and develop vocal confidence in a live performance setting.
Physical Awareness: Take command of your physical presence on stage. Practice movement and performance skills through physical games, exercises and training.
Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short group presentation.

Term 3, 2023: Behind the Shadows

Stalk the monsters and uncover what lurks in the shadows  under your bed! Working with visual storytelling techniques, including puppetry and physical theatre, create suspenseful stories based on urban legend and popular children's mysteries. Devise a presentation inspired by the most mysterious monsters and curious curiosities.

Course components

  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging performance exercises to develop and share your original ideas with others.
Collaboration: Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a live presentation.
Puppetry: Discover and practice puppetry techniques towards a live presentation.

Term 4, 2023: Exit, Stage Left

Tune-up your acting skills and develop stage craft technique to give your live performance the 'wow' factor. Rehearse scripted scenes from plays written especially for young people, then showcase your skills as you present your scenes at the end of the course.
