Drama for Grades 4-7, Torrens Park

Practical skill based learning in the performing arts led by industry experts with a focus on personal and creative development.

Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 1, 2018: Animal Restaurant

What do Hungry Joeys, Pizza Hutch and Golden Larches have in common? They are restaurants that only animals eat at of course! Explore staging environments, develop animal characters and create an original restaurant scene for your animal characters to enjoy. Invent the menu, set the table and watch the hilarity as the restaurant fills up with every kind of foodie animal.

Course components

  • Craft: Participate in improvised scene work to develop basic acting technique.
  • Freeing the Imagination: Develop new stories, ideas and adventures through improvisational exercises and techniques.
  • Ensemble: Work as part of a team to achieve a shared goal through performance.

Term 2, 2018: What did you say?

What’s a Ning Nang Nong? Or a Bazonka? Perhaps you always wondered what the letter A said to the letter B one quiet night in the classroom. Find out this term when you explore some very silly nonsense poems through physical theatre and voice.

Course components

  • Vocal Expression: Learn how the voice works and develop vocal confidence in a live performance setting.
  • Physical Awareness: Take command of your physical presence on stage. Practice movement and performance skills through physical games, exercises and training.
  • Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short scripted presentation.

Term 3, 2018: Monster Mate

Create your own Monster Mate in NIDA’s Monster Lab! Using acting tools and character development techniques, develop, train and learn about your Monster’s strengths, weaknesses and special powers. Invent a Monster size story that showcases your special powers then train for the final test to be staged in front of friends and family at the end of the course.

Course components

  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging performance exercises to develop and share your original ideas with others.
  • Characters: Experiment with vocal and physical expression to create an original character.
  • Collaboration: Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a live presentation.

Term 4, 2018: Origin Stories

Step into the shoes or indeed the tights of characters from your favourite movies, cartoons and books. Bring these characters to life by retelling the story of how they came to be who they are today. Showcase your character’s Origin Story and present selected scenes from the original scripts at the end of the course.

Course components

  • Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life a short written text for live performance.
  • Stage Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a performance.
  • Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short scripted, live presentation.
