Practical, skill-based learning led by industry experts across a range of performing arts disciplines. NIDA courses for grade 8-10 students are designed to support and inspire young people at any stage of their creative development.

Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 1, 2020: Told by an Idiot

Utilise a variety of improvisation techniques to create characters, develop plots and tackle the challenges you encounter in creating unique and compelling stories. Focusing on the performer, the material, and the audience, this course invites each participant to script, rehearse and perform extraordinary tales under the direction of a NIDA specialist.

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Explore plot, structure and narrative through improvisation.
  • Character Development: Improvise and sustain a truthful/believable character.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with your peers as you work together to explore different improvisation styles.

Term 2, 2020: 3 Characters in Search of an Actor

Extend your range as an actor as you explore and apply a variety of vocal and physical techniques to a selection of monologues. Re-work and fuse these speeches to create a dynamic solo performance where you transform from one character to another before an audience. This course will include a session on voice and accent.

Course components

  • Accents: Use accent in performance accurately and confidently
  • Physical awareness: Extend physical range in exploring character
  • Performance skill: Application of specific voice and movement choices to imbue character and performance.

Term 3, 2020: From Silent Movies to Stage Plays

Bring the gags, humour and fun of the silent movie age to the modern stage. Be inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s silent misunderstandings and physical antics as you and your company devise and script your own contemporary work.

Course components

  • Collaboration: Collaborate effectively to construct and perform theatrical performances
  • Contemporary Practice: Extend knowledge of contemporary performance practices.
  • Writing for Performance: Structure and perform scripted scenes from improvised material

Term 4, 2020: Brave New World

Explore an international play through a simulated rehearsal experience. Research the world of the play and explore how your discoveries affect the decisions you make on the rehearsal floor. Use a variety of techniques and accent work to bring characters to life in a selection of scenes to be perfomed to your NIDA peers at the end of the course.

Course components

  • Text Interpretation: Dramaturgical skills in exploring the world of the play.
  • Acting technique: Develop and apply extended Stanislavski techniques to text work and character development.
  • Rehearsal and Evaluation: Collaboration with a director and use of feedback to further rehearsal process.
