Curly Hair Masterclass with Cynthia Simango

Overview

This course is about more than hair — it’s about creating safe, informed, collaborative creative spaces where authenticity, respect, and representation thrive.

Explore the history behind the curl in this immersive two-day course that explores the powerful intersection between hair, identity, and creativity in screen storytelling. Designed for practicing and emerging hair and make-up artists, this course goes beyond styling — it offers essential cultural context, technical foundations, and self-awareness tools to work with all curl types confidently and respectfully.

Gain an understanding of curl-based discrimination and its continued impact on today’s on-set practices and engage in practical exercises to understand the structural needs of textured hair. Develop culturally respectful styling techniques and practice consultation processes to prioritise inclusive communication.

Course Components

  • Investigate the historical perception and cultural symbolism of curly hair.
  • Explore the use of appropriate curly hair techniques through practical application and create simple styles including a twist out and refreshing and shaping an afro.
  • Develop skills for confident communication and consultation in your creative practice.
