NIDA Online: The Standard English Accent

Overview

Boost your vocal confidence and flexibility with NIDA Open’s specialised dialect training course. Experience the nuances that bring accents to life in performance and understand the phonetics and technical essentials when performing the Standard English accent, in a collaborative and inclusive environment. 

The course sessions are hosted by our experienced teaching artists who come with vast industry experience and training knowledge. A range of practical activities, suitable for remote learning, will immerse you in the intricacies of phonetics, the mechanics of articulation, facial muscle engagement and precise oral placement. Learn and practice the technical essentials of The Standard English accent and apply the skills to a variety of short texts to enhance character. Whether you’re refining your dialect skills for an audition, preparing for a performance, or looking to expand your acting repertoire, this course will provide you with the foundational tools to perform the accent with confidence.  

Delivery: Online, 3 × 2 hour sessions 

Self-directed learning: 60 min vocal exercises and practice as well as text work between classes 

Outcomes

  • Develop an appreciation for Phonetics as you learn the technical essentials of The Standard English accent and its variations 
  • Apply the vocal techniques learnt to a variety of short texts 
  • Refine your character development skills and recreate specific intonational patterns
