Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique

Term 1, 2022: Getting Technical

Get camera ready as you learn the technical tricks required to give a perfect on-screen performance every time. Rehearse and record a variety of well-known TV and film scripts, discovering the role spontaneity plays alongside the technical elements of your on-screen performance.

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Use improvisation in a screen performance. Apply improvisation techniques to a scripted performance.
  • Acting technique: Learn and apply fundamental screen acting techniques.
  • Ensemble: Collaborate as part of a team on recorded performance exercises.

Term 2, 2022: The Actor’s Passport

Extend your vocal skills as you explore the technique required to successfully perform General American & Standard English accents. Apply this technique to a range of exercises and learn scenes from English and American films to perform for friends and family.

Course components

  • Technique: Awareness of techniques for creating a fully embodied accent for a character.
  • Physical awareness: Understand the demands of accent on the physicality of the character.
  • Voice: Develop a process to to work independently on scenes with accents.

Term 3 2022: Sound of a Story

Storytelling and music go hand in hand. With visual albums dominating the music landscape learn the ins and outs of how to create your own music video clip from the first idea to the final shot. Work with your team of NIDA trainee-filmmakers to discover how to develop concept and construct a visual story to enhance a piece of music.

Course components

  • Collaboration: Engage in a group creative process to develop an original short film clip, assume a variety of roles in a creative and production capacity.
  • Contemporary Practice: Explore and apply contemporary recorded performance practices from Australia and around the world.
  • Film Making: Develop and shoot a short video clip. Learn about film production roles.

Term 4 2022: Inside and Out

Work with a NIDA tutor to develop the inner life of a character to its fullest then develop the technical skills to let that character shine on screen. Work in-depth on well loved scenes from film and television chosen especially for your age group.

Course components

  • Text interpretation: Bring to life through the application of acting technique a short written text for recorded performance.
  • Technique: Practice acting to camera techniques. Discover the difference between live and recorded performance craft.
  • Character Development: Develop and record a character from a scripted scene.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
