Level: Core Techniques

Collaborate with a lighting designer. Learn how to use equipment and understand technical procedures. Put ideas and theory into practice by assisting with the design, rig, focus and operation for a presentation in one of NIDA’s performance spaces.

Course components

  • Discover the history of theatrical lights and how they can enhance the staging of a production.
  • Utilise colour theory to develop a lighting concept which will assist in the creation of a lighting design plan.
  • Work in a theatre venue and put your design ideas into practice. Discover how to rig, apply gels and scrims, and operate lights safely in a practical approach to lighting in the theatre.

Outcomes

  • Ability to draw on lighting and colour theory to develop lighting design plans for the theatre.
  • Technical awareness of theatrical lights and luminary positioning.
  • Appropriate use of production, staging and lighting terminology.

  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook or electronic device and a bottle of water to all classes.
