Staging and Technical Production Residency

For adults 18+ years

Commencing Monday 15 January 2024

Develop the skills to become a key collaborator in a technical production team for theatre and live performance.

Investigate the various roles and responsibilities of the production management team and explore the processes to lead and co-ordinate within a creative environment.
Investigate lighting and sound design and their purpose in creative storytelling and learn to operate technical equipment in a NIDA theatre space. Collaborate with your peers to apply your knowledge to a small group project lead by an industry professional.

Course components

Week one: Monday 15 January – Friday 19 January, 10:00am-5:00pm

Gain insight into the various roles and responsibilities of stage and production management. Learn essential strategies for the planning and co-ordinating of a company of creatives. Examine opportunities for the application of sound design to dramatic texts and use professional equipment to realise a sound design of your own.

Week two: Sunday 21 January – Thursday 25 January, 10:00am-5:00pm

Collaborate with a lighting designer and explore creative approaches in developing a lighting concept for theatre. Learn to rig, focus, and operate lights for live performance. Integrate your staging and technical production skills to bring a short dramatic text to life.

  • Apply appropriate processes and procedures to manage a rehearsal process and live performance
  • Realise visual storytelling through sound and lighting design
  • Develop an understanding of industry safe practice

  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear unrestrictive and comfortable clothing for all performance related course.
  • Please wear closed in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • It is compulsory to wear closed-toe footwear in our Design and Technical courses, and any classes which take place in the Reg Grundy Studio.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.

Entry to NIDA Residencies is by selection. Please enrol in the class below to lodge your application. The deadline for applications is the Monday 11 December 2023

  • All applications will be considered within 10 workings days and the outcome of your application will be advised by e-mail.
  • You will receive a post enrolment form via email after your application. Please submit information about your previous experience and what you hope to gain from attending the course in this form.
  • NIDA Open will select participants based on this information. If you are successful you will receive a link to pay the remainder of the course fee. Group size will be restricted to ensure individual attention.
