Acting on Screen Grades 9-10, Brisbane

Practical skill-based learning in the performing arts led by industry experts with a focus on personal and creative development.

Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique

Term 4, 2021: All In A Day’s Audition

Uncover the techniques for approaching screen tests and auditions and get ready for action! Select and prepare monologues and short scenes suitable for castings, unpack the given circumstances and learn how to present them on camera. This term includes a session on how to successfully set up and record a self-test on your smart device for remote auditioning.

Course components

  • Audition Practice: Participate in simulated auditions and screen tests.
  • Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life a short written text for live performance.
  • Technique: Establish a relationship with the camera as you master hitting your mark, eye line techniques and develop an on screen personal presence.

Term 1, 2022: History – Take 2

Put your improvisation skills to the test as you explore alternate endings to some of history’s high stakes moments. Put yourself in the scene and develop on screen skills to remain in character and spontaneously active as history unfolds (again) with you as a central character. With history in your hands, it’s your call for Take 2.

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Utilise improvisation skills to build a screen performance.
  • Craft: Participate in improvised scene work to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.
  • Collaboration: Work in a group to incorporate new, shared ideas into a recorded performance work.

Term 2, 2022: Blooper Reel

Develop your physical skills as we explore on screen slapstick comedy. Drawing inspiration from artists including Rowan Atkinson and Charlie Chaplin, understand the technical requirements of on screen physical comedy and present your Blooper Reel to an audience at the end of the course.

Course components

  • Vocal expression- Learn how the voice works, develop confidence and vocal technique in a recorded performance.
  • Character Development: Develop a unique character for recorded performance.
  • Physical Awareness – Take command of your physical presence on screen and consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of an on screen performance.

Term 3, 2022: Oddballs and Outcasts

Popular and perfect is so last year. Let’s celebrate the stories of the ‘Atypical’ outcasts and the watchful ‘Walllflowers’. Collaborate with your NIDA peers to devise a world where ‘fitting in’ is frowned upon. Develop skills to give these oddball and outcast characters an authentic voice as you bring their unique stories to life on screen.

Course components

  • Character Development: Develop a unique character for recorded performance.
  • Performance – Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short, recorded presentation.
  • Collaboration: Work in a group, incorporate shared ideas into a new, recorded performance work.

Term 4, 2022: Casting Club

Discover techniques for approaching screen auditions. Select, prepare and learn monologues and short scenes suitable for castings. Learn how to feel confident in every audition whether it’s for a television commerical or feature film. This course will also include development of skills to prepare for self tapes.

Course components

  • Text Analysis – Interpret and bring to life a short written text for screen performance.
  • Audition Practice: Participate in simulated auditions and screen tests.
