Learning framework
Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.
Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.
NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:
Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique
Term 1, 2023: Here's Looking at You
The most memorable on-screen moments in film history are nowhere to be found in the script! Join legends of the big screen as you explore how to improvise beyond the life of a scene. Bring your unique interpretation to well-known TV and film scenes and learn how to remain relaxed and free take after take.
Course components
- Spontaneity: Utilise improvisation skills to build a screen performance.
Acting technique: Explore characterisation through building technical skills such as making and accepting offers, actions and objectives.
Ensemble: Work as part of a team on recorded performance exercises.
Term 2, 2023: Showdowns on Set
From the Wild West to Wonder Woman, be captured by stories and characters from your favourite action and adventure films! Engage voice and movement skills to create the good, the bad and the ugly characters from your favourite films. Shoot and star in an onscreen showdown of your own.
Course components
- Vocal expression- Learn how the voice works, develop confidence and vocal technique in a recorded performance.
Physical awareness: Develop physical skills to move and shape character of a set period.
Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting and technical screenmaking exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
Term 3, 2023: Time-Warp and Replay
Given the chance, would you go back in time and do things differently? Would you right every wrong you made? Inspired by time-warp movies like Back To The Future and Freaky Friday, work in a group to create scenes for your own time-warp TV pilot. Adapt to new worlds and refine your skills for acting on-screen.
Course components
- Collaboration: Work in a group, incorporate shared ideas into a new, recorded performance work.
Screen Writing: Devise and script original scenes for screen.
Character Development: Deepen your connection to character as you explore their personal history.
Term 4, 2023: Australian TV - Fastforward/Rewind
Work with a NIDA Open teaching artist to re-create scenes from some of the best contemporary and classic Australian Film and TV shows. Get camera ready as you learn the technical skills required to give an engaging on-screen performance every time.
Course components
- Acting Technique: Practice and refine acting to camera techniques.
Text Analysis: Apply screen-acting skills to analyse and interpret the events of a scene.
Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a performance.
Important information
- Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
- Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
- If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
- NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
- Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.

- Discount is only applicable when booking all four terms within the same calendar year.
- Discount is not available online. Please book over the phone by calling the office on 1300 450 417 to receive the discount.
- If students do not attend all four terms, the discount is no longer valid.
