Practice skill-based learning led by industry experts across a range of performing arts disciplines. NIDA courses for grade 11 and 12 students are designed to support and inspire young people at any stage of their creative development.

Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 1, 2022: Mess with the Text

Start with a Yes and see where it takes you! Develop your creativity and collaboration skills to disrupt the narrative of your favourite texts as you explore improvisation and spontaneity. Deepen your performance craft as you laugh out loud and uncover the Rules of Agreement to master your spur-of-the-moment thinking. Stay open minded to endless possibilities and learn how to create improvised performance.

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Develop spontaneity and performance craft and apply it to long and short form improvisation.
  • Character Development: Improvise and sustain a truthful and believable character.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with your peers as you work together to explore different improvisation styles.

Term 2, 2022: The Speaking Body

Embody the fundamentals of vocal and physical training for performance as you discover the power of breath, body and sound. Deepen your connections to the ensemble and build awareness of your body in space through contemporary skills-based training. Explore language and text by unlocking the lyricism within modern scripts and Shakespearean scenes.

Course components

  • Physical awareness: Learn techniques to release habitual muscular tension.
  • Voice: Explore effective alignment for use of breath and vocalisation of sound.
  • Performance skill: Apply specific voice and movement choices to imbue character and performance.

Term 3, 2022: Symphony of Sound

Scroll through your playlist and develop your devising skills to craft original scenes for the stage inspired by contemporary world music. Transform chords into characters as you explore stagecraft, playbuilding techniques and current creative practice from around the globe. Engage in a comprehensive creative development process as you produce a new devised work and let the beat drop!

Course components

  • Contemporary Practice: Extend knowledge of contemporary performance practices.
  • Collaboration: Explore the varied skills that are needed to craft contemporary performance as an ensemble.
  • Stage Craft: Discover the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a performance.

Term 4, 2022: Modern Epics

From ancient Greeks to modern-day heroes, uncover the world of scripts and staging as you travel through the theatrical canon. Gain experience within a professional rehearsal process led by your NIDA tutor and apply voice, movement and character analysis techniques to your performance. Stage a selection of short scripted works for your invited audience at the end of term.

Course components

  • Text Interpretation: Build your skills in dramaturgy as you discover the world of language in live performance.
  • Collaboration: Develop a collaborative relationship with your director as you explore staging possibilities.
  • Acting Technique: Explore dynamic characters through detailed script analysis and voice and movement technique.

  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Participants must provide their own lunch, including snacks and drinks.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11–12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
