Maree Freeman

Program Manager – Schools

Maree is a playwright, producer and teaching artist. Most recently she held the role of CEO/Artistic Director of Milk Crate Theatre; a company working with people who have experienced homelessness or social marginalisation. For Milk Crate Theatre she wrote, produced and directed Running Blind, Full Circle, You Are Here and Unfinished; directed Shushed, So This Is Christmas 2012 and Road Test: Works In Progress and wrote This House Is Mine (Currency Press) and The Things That Are Left Behind. In addition to this, Maree was Dramaturge on Lord of the Flies (2013, US-A-UM and Malthouse Theatre), wrote and co-produced Fallout (2012, Tamarama Rock Surfers) and Pictures of Bright Lights (2011, Little Ones Theatre Company).

Maree has lectured in drama for the Australian Catholic University and has worked with inclusive theatre companies Chicken Shed and Angel Shed in the UK as an Artistic Facilitator. She also established her own award-winning theatre company in Newcastle; Synergy Cubed Productions (2004 – 2006). Maree graduated with a Bachelor Teaching / Bachelor of Arts (Drama / English) from the University of Newcastle in 2006 and in 2010 completed the Graduate Diploma in Dramatic Art (Playwriting) from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Maree is interested in creating new Australian work, telling contemporary stories from real communities and designing innovative creative learning opportunities for teachers and students.
