Drama for Grades 5-6, NIDA Kensington
Practical skill-based learning in the performing arts led by industry experts with a focus on personal and creative development.
Learning framework
Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.
Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.
NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:
Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging
Term 1, 2023: Detention!
Imagine being stuck in detention for the whole weekend! It seems your horrible teacher is out to ruin your life. So, what will you do next? Explore short and long form improvisation as you turn this nightmare on its head without a script in sight. Create original characters and work collaboratively to improvise a whole new reinvention of detention.
Course components
- Craft: Participate in improvised scene work to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.
Freeing the Imagination: Engage your imagination and develop lateral thinking skills through spontaneity and improvisation exercise.
Ensemble: Work as part of a team to achieve a shared goal through improvised performance.
Term 2, 2023: Radio Revival
Step back in time to the golden age of radio when voice alone created worlds filled with intrigue, mystery and drama. Fast forward to 2023 as you work with your NIDA teaching artist to develop contemporary skills in your role as a radio actor and voice over artist. Work with your ensemble to develop your own radio drama.
Course components
- Vocal Expression: Learn how the voice works and develop vocal confidence in a live performance setting.
- Characters: Experiment with vocal and physical expression to create an original character.
- Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short scripted presentation.
Term 3, 2023: Worlds Worst!
Inspired by the despicable characters of David Walliams' Worlds Worst books, let your imagination run wild as you devise your very own darstardly deeds and shocking scenarios. Explore character and storytelling as you devise your own "worlds worst" scenes that will be rehearsed and presented at the end of term.
Course components
- Physical Awareness: Take command of your physical presence on stage. Practice movement and performance skills through physical exercises and training.
Characters: Experiment with vocal and physical expression to create an original character.
Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging performance exercises, learn how to develop and share your original ideas with others.
Term 4, 2023: Script Savvy
Characters are the heartbeat of great scripts. Actors bring their triumphs, struggles and conflicts to life through engaging performances on stage. Develop skills to read, analyse and interpret scripts and learn rehearsal techniques to create fully developed characters. Create a short showcase of scripted work to present to family and friends.
Course components
- Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life a short written text for live performance.
Stage Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realization of a performance.
Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short scripted, live presentation.
