Screen Study provides a supportive and creatively challenging environment for young artists serious about their artistic development. Each course runs across a semester (two terms) and students work towards group acting on screen outcomes supported by NIDA’s creative leaders. Course work includes an introduction to a variety of acting on screen disciplines and technical skills to help students develop their passion for performing arts in a holistic approach to acting and screen training. Screen Study is the perfect vehicle to apply your screen skills and extend your creative training!

Students engage in a personalised assessment and feedback process with their tutor at the end of every semester, providing them with the information and support they need to decide the next step in their creative education.

Semester 1, 2024: Acting for Screen: Frighteningly Real

From perilous plot twists to chilling cliffhangers, discover the role actors play in elevating fictional tales into real screen stories that scare and thrill us. Explore text analysis and character development techniques and gain an understanding of how directors build tension in performances to realise the horror genre. Extend your acting technique across this scary 16 week semester to deliver authentic performances from some of your most frightening favourites. 

Course components

  • Text interpretation: Interpret film and television scripts and develop an authentic character for the screen.
  • Acting technique – Learn and apply extended screen acting techniques.
  • Character Development: Develop and record a character from a scripted scene.
  • Contemporary Practice: Explore and apply contemporary screen practices from Australia and around the world.

Semester 2, 2024: Industry Practice: Accelerated Auditions

The process of auditioning for film and TV is an art in itself. This 16 week semester gives you the opportunity to explore effective strategies for audition preparation and learn how in room castings run. Participate in mock auditions across consecutive weeks to develop your agility and ability to be first take ready, prepared yet playful and confident to portray the character without the pressure of being 'perfect'. Get ready to extend your training in this ultimate actor challenge. 

Course components

  • Text interpretation – Interpret film and television scripts and develop an authentic character for the screen.
  • Spontaneity: Develop spontaneity and performance craft and apply it to the audition process.
  • Industry Practice: Learn what casting agents and directors expect from actors through the casting process.
  • Performance Skill: Understand the demands of a screen audition and prepare and participate in simulated auditions.

Pre-requisite

  • This is a 16 week course and students must be available to attend every session. End of course feedback and project participation is dependent on reliable attendance. Students can apply for attendance exemption in exceptional circumstances, applications must be made in advance to the supervising course manager.
  • Students enrolled in this course must have participated in at least three Acting on Screen NIDA term or holiday courses prior to attending this course OR be able to provide evidence of appropriate training at a comparable institution.

  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
